AI writing and integrity review.

    Elicit alternative

An Elicit Alternative Built on Verifiable, Page-Cited Evidence

Elicit helps researchers find papers and extract findings. WriteGo starts where discovery ends: it turns 5–30 uploaded papers into a literature review matrix where every claim is a verbatim, page-located quote — with no black-box scores.

Honest scope: WriteGo does not search the open literature

Direct answers about WriteGo as an Elicit alternative

What each tool is for, where WriteGo's verification model differs, and when Elicit remains the better fit.

What is Elicit, and what does WriteGo do differently?

Elicit is an AI research assistant that helps researchers surface papers and extract findings from the literature. WriteGo does not reproduce that discovery workflow. It starts after you have chosen your papers: 5–30 uploaded PDFs become an eight-column evidence matrix where every contentful cell holds a verbatim quote with page and character-offset locators, under review states you control.

Why choose WriteGo as an Elicit alternative?

Choose WriteGo when the priority is evidence you can audit. Matrix cells are captured quotes, not model-generated summaries; there are no black-box quality scores; and reference-only source packages hand page-located evidence to Writer Agent and Integrity Review, with return links to each claim's matrix entry.

    When does Elicit fit better?

For literature discovery. Elicit is built to search the research literature and surface relevant papers; WriteGo has no open-literature search — the Literature Review Matrix only sees PDFs you upload to its library. While you are still finding papers, a discovery tool is the right starting point. Once the reading list exists, WriteGo takes over the synthesis, verification, and citation work.

Can I use Elicit and WriteGo together?

Yes — they cover different stages of the same review. Discover and shortlist papers wherever you prefer, then upload the chosen PDFs, up to 10 MB each, into the matrix's own paper library. Server-side extraction with OCR for scanned pages processes each paper, and the finished matrix exports to Markdown, formula-safe CSV, and APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago, BibTeX, or RIS references.

    Elicit

    Literature discovery and extraction

An AI research assistant that surfaces papers and extracts findings — the stage before WriteGo, while you decide what to read.

Two different stages of a literature review

Discovery answers "what should I read?"; synthesis answers "what does the evidence say?". Elicit, as an AI research assistant, works the first stage: surfacing papers and extracting findings. WriteGo deliberately works the second: it never searches the open literature, and everything in a matrix comes from the 5–30 PDFs you uploaded — which is exactly what makes each cell verifiable.

Cells you can check, not summaries you must trust

Every contentful matrix cell holds a claim backed by a verbatim captured quote with paper-version, page, and character-offset locators. Unreviewed, not-located, needs-review, and conflicting evidence stay visibly distinct, and no black-box quality score is layered on top. If a cell looks wrong, its locator takes you to the page where you can see for yourself.

Eight fixed columns keep extraction honest

Research question, sample, method, result, effect, limitation, conflict of interest, and DOI. A fixed column set means limitations and conflicts of interest get captured for every paper, and matrices stay comparable across projects. Candidate rows auto-seed from extracted paper metadata checkpoints, so the grid starts from what the papers state rather than an empty table.

Verification is the server's job, not a promise

Every matrix quote is re-verified against the bound source page using exact matching under Unicode and whitespace normalization. In ChatPDF, the single-paper reader, every page citation is verbatim-checked, and an answer that fails validation is demoted and not billed.

Evidence flows downstream without leaking full text

Reference-only source packages are immutable and versioned, carrying paper fingerprints, page numbers, and character offsets — never full text. Writer Agent and Integrity Review resolve exactly the evidence entries you selected, and evidence-level return links reopen the matrix entry each claim came from.

    What WriteGo deliberately leaves out

No open-literature search, no model-written matrix cells, no AI detection inside the matrix, and no quality scores it cannot explain. If your bottleneck is finding papers, pair a discovery tool with WriteGo; if your bottleneck is turning a reading list into defensible synthesis, that is what the matrix is for — and it is currently free.

    FAQ

Does WriteGo search academic databases the way Elicit does?

No. WriteGo has no open-literature search by design. The Literature Review Matrix works only on PDFs you upload to its library, which is what allows every cell to be pinned to a page and character range in a document you hold.

Does WriteGo use AI to fill in the matrix?

No. The matrix has no AI chat, and cells are never model-generated: they hold verbatim quotes captured from your uploaded papers, under visible review states. AI question answering exists in ChatPDF — a separate tool with a separate paper library — where every page citation is verbatim-checked and unverifiable answers are not billed.

What does the WriteGo Literature Review Matrix cost?

It is currently free. Sign-in is required, but uploading papers, building the matrix, cross-paper search, and reference export charge no credits today.

Can I bring in my existing reference library?

Reference metadata imports from Zotero JSON, BibTeX, and RIS, and resolves from a DOI, arXiv ID, PubMed ID, or URL, with per-field provenance. The papers themselves still need to be uploaded as PDFs — the matrix only makes claims about documents it can locate quotes in.
